Earth Hour 8:30-9:30pm on 28 March 2009 Saturday

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

It was pioneered by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald (a daily broadsheet newspaper published by Fairfax Media in Sydney, Australia) in 2007 with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning off their lights for an hour in between 7:30pm to 8:30pm on 31 Mar 2007 Saturday. Many Sydney icons were switched off for the hour including the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House sails and the Luna Park face. According to Energy Australia, there was a 10.2% reduction in electricity consumption across the Sydney CBD for the 60 minutes Earth Hour 2007.

This event had grown into a global sustainability movement by the following year of 2008 and achieved worldwide participation up to 100 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

In 2009, the Earth Hour will be at 8.30pm local time on 28 March, Saturday. Hope the people across the world to turn off their lights and join together in creating the vital conversation about the future of our precious planet. The iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to The Americas will stand in darkness at that one hour.

[Source: www.earthhour.org, Wikipedia, WWF Australia and Facebook Earth Hour Group]

Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. It’s just as simple as a flick of the switch. So, lets join for the Earth Hour 2009 next Saturday (28 March 2009) from 8:30pm to 9:30pm and make a difference.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach more than one billion people in 1,000 cities around the world (sign up and be counted). They will send you newsletters filled with useful tips and a reminder for the big night.

Everybody, lets save our blue planet by turning off the light for an hour on 28 Mar 2009 8:30pm to 9:30pm. To Sign UP Now!

The End of Urban Yoga and Newborn Energy

I'm just away for 2 weeks, my blog already messed up by another war... Most of the comments under the title of "World Yoga Day 2009" against the yoga spirit or the meaning of this World Yoga Day, really sad :( Will spend some time to read all and spring clean it later!

[Wonder why the yogis in Malaysia couldn't practise yoga in peace...]

Beside the fire fighting, another yoga center is going off so fast, i.e. Urban Yoga. With effective Mar 2009, the new management (TSM) has taken over and renamed as "Energy". They also implemented new package fees @ RM168 per month unlimited for the public. Those existing members of Urban Yoga and anyone with a membership at any yoga or fitness center, can enjoy RM388 unlimited 3-month package. But a new joiner without any existing membership will be charged @ RM488 unlimited 3-month.

The Cheras outlet will be shifted to Tasik Selatan with effective May 2009 while the other 2 outlets at Kepong and Plaza Damas will be remained. This is due to expensive rental to occupy the entire 5th floor at Cheras Plaza and heard that this new building at the Tasik Selatan is the owner's property. I think cost saving is needed at this economic crisis, but wonder the location is fit to the customers' need. I went to the site but not too sure which building is it as they yet to put up any signage or banner. I just aware it is around the factory area behind the "Giant" or "UCSI" and below are few snapshots captured.

World Yoga Day 2009 [Sunday on 8th Feb 2009]

World Yoga Day 2009: Let's join forces and support people living in the Matshiya Community in Zimbabwe. Click here to join.

World Yoga Day is a day where the yoga teachers and schools around the world will donate their time and space to a two hour yoga session which is devoted to human rights. The class should be held from 11:00am – 1:00pm sharp, local time in each time zone, which will lead to a 24-hour yoga marathon around the world.

This is a NON-Profit prject with with NO commercial interest involved. Students attending the event will donate whatever tuition they can afford. All contributions are welcome and also students who can't pay at all – the money is important to help victims of human right violation but so is the spirit.

Found that this campaign only started in year 2007 and Germany has the most yoga teachers and schools/centers participated. This year 2009 is the first time that Malaysia participated and I only found yogaloft and yoga365 from Malaysia in the list. I couldn’t even find any participant from Hong Kong and Singapore. No wonder some of the practitioners yet to aware of this meaningful event.

This idea was originated from Germany by a film director cum yoga teacher living in Berlin, named Samira. One Saturday morning after a long night with little sleep, Samira was counting milk bubbles in her Cappuccino when the idea for World Yoga Day popped out of nowhere. When the fabulous Sandra, Bjoern and Lei joined her the idea started to walk. The milk bubble count was 6844.

Sandra is a freelancing interaction designer and graphic design teacher living and working in Berlin, Germany. Of course she's an enthusiastic yogi too and always searching for projects that actually do make a difference.

Björn is an IT professional who also living in Berlin. He did his very best to set up this accessible website for Samiras great idea of a WORLD YOGA DAY for charity. Let this union of yogis become an energetic swarm and in 2008 Björn became an enthusiastic and certified Tantra Practitioner.

Below are the past and current World Yoga Day:

21st Jan 2007 (Sun)
In 2007, they joined forces with Medica mondiale (www.medicamondiale.org) to contribute to the elimination of violence against women and girls in Afghanistan.
Donation collected so far: US$19,731 / €14,657

3rd Feb 2008 (Sun)
While China is fast developing into a global super-power, the human rights situation in China is still cause for concern. Therefore, in 2008 World Yoga Day decided to support AI's Human Rights for China campaign
Donation collected so far: US$37,085.45 / €23,394.22

8th Feb 2009 (Sun)
This year they like to support people in Zimbabwe. The country has been deteriorated in the 28 years regime under Robert Mugabe and brought about massive suffering to its population.

On The Mat and Beyond A Healing Practice (1)

Lately, there are too many unhappy incidents happened in Malaysia Yoga World. At first, YogaZone (“YZ”) crisis started in Jun/Jul, followed by its Receivership in Aug and declared closure in Sep. Everything just happened too fast within a quarter (Q3 2008).

Now, it happened to yogaloft which should be a luxury yoga center with high end facilities has postponed their official opening due to internal problem and announced temporary closed for renovation. Luckily, they were willing to make a full cash refund to all the affected members with little compensation. So that the members’ hard earn money won’t get burnt again. No matter what is their internal business issue, the most important is none of the yoga friends / consumers being hurt.

There are too many negative chi lately and caused some very upset and disappointed. So, let start some POSITIVE chi now to light up everyone’s new hope. As usual, our nice bloggers here always send me useful information and the event that near to date is “On the Mat and Beyond - A Healing Practice”. • the critically and terminally ill
  • stroke patients the physically disabled
  • the overweight - BMI of 25 and above
  • families and couples/partners

Their objective of this event is “to share their knowledge and skills with the participants so they could take the practice home with them. Through this event they hope to extend love and compassion transcending race and religion, tighten family ties and encourage healthy living.” Sounds great, right?

Due to this is a Charity event, they need some helps from the public for the items below for the event and also the volunteers (teachers and practitioners) on the event day on 4th Jan 2009.

  • Yoga mats*
  • Yoga blocks*
  • Yoga belts*
  • Steel chairs*

* These items can be on loan or sponsorship/donation, new or used ones. The sponsored/donated items will be sold to the participants at the end of the event and the collection forwarded to the needy.

Tribunal for Consumer Claims - YogaZone Case

Please click the above image to enlarge it for better viewing or easy reading

There are so many kind bloggers here always help me in updating this blog with latest news and events. Their efforts and contribution make this blog more informative. Really appreciate their kindness and helpfulness all the time. THANK YOU.

One of the regular bloggers updated that the Sinchew Daily dated 11th Dec (yesterday) published a small column about the winning case of the Tribunal claim of YogaZone's incident. Another one of them has sent me the above scanned news as I couldn't find it online.

I'm not so good in Chinese and hope my translation below is right, otherwise please send in your comment and correction.

It stated that a well known yoga center was closed in Sep 2008 and a number of the affected members have filed in their calims in the Tribunal lately to claim the refund of their paid membership fees from the owner of this yoga center. Majority of the cases received by Tribunal for Consmer Claimsin Kuala Lumpur this week are this Yoga Center case.

Claimants:
  • Accountant (37 year-old)
Staying at Sri Petaling and she has signed up a life package on 26th Apr at RM3,500.

  • Bank Staff (30 year-old)
Also staying at sri Petaling and she has signed up on 1st Jun. prepaid RM2,500.

  • Planner (25 year-old)
Signed up at Kepong branch on 20th Jun at the fee of RM1,116. The package is for one year and free another 6 months.

  • Engineer
This engineer signed up on 1st Oct this year and later found that the yoga center was already closed. As such, he appeal a refund of RM1,116.
(Comment: I thought by mid of Sep, a number of victims already started to file their claims to the Tribunal and the Receiver declared closure with the notice in YogaZone’s website on 25 Sep 2008. By 1st Oct, the affected outlet space in Plaza Damas and Kepong were taken over by Urban Yoga. So, wonder which outlet this engineer had signed up the package on 1st Oct…?)

  • Business Woman
This business lady has signed up a “Golden Circle” package and paid RM5,888. She claimed that the yoga center was closed and unable to deliver services, as such appeal for full refund.

The defendant was absent and the above five claimants won the case with total amount of RM14,120.

The whole article never mentioned about the name of YogaZone, but we all aware that the only well known yoga center in Malaysia declared closure in Sep 2008 is YogaZone.

My concern here is although these five claimants have won the case but will they successfully get back their refund as the defendant was not even to take his responsibility to attend the court for hearing and YogaZone has already been declared closure. So, how are they going to get the refund? Would appreciate if any victim of YogaZone has successfully claimed their hard earn money could share with us here as there are still many victims out there looking for justice... THANKS!
